Understanding CEFR Levels

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages — the global standard for measuring language proficiency.

What is CEFR?

CEFR is an internationally recognized framework developed by the Council of Europe. It describes language ability across six levels — from complete beginner (A1) to mastered proficiency (C2). Employers, universities, and institutions worldwide use CEFR to set requirements and evaluate candidates.

The Six CEFR Levels

Each level describes what a learner can do in reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

A1Beginner

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions. Can introduce themselves and others.

A2Elementary

Can communicate in simple, routine tasks requiring direct exchange of information.

B1Intermediate

Can deal with most travel situations and produce simple connected text on familiar topics.

B2Upper Intermediate

Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity with native speakers.

C1Advanced

Can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much searching for expressions.

C2Mastery

Can understand everything heard or read and express spontaneously with precision.
